UPDATE: A 17-year-old girl was arrested after driving off from a crash that injured two teenagers on Orange River Boulevard in Lee County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the Fort Myers girl, who’s identity has not been released at this time, was located by troopers at her home.
Troopers also impounded her vehicle and the girl was booked into the Lee County Jail.
Family members confirmed that Nancy and Daniel Bernardo were the two teens hit on Thursday morning. They are both out of the hospital and recovering at home.
Johnny Ventura, a Dunbar High School senior who lives right across the street from the bus stop, says he sees drivers speed by every morning and it’s dangerous due to how dark it is.
“Cars going fast looking at their phones and kids have to cross to get to the bus same thing can happen,” says Johnny Ventura.
The county tells reporters they already have a project underway for the beginning of next year to place sidewalks in the area.
“Lee County DOT has a sidewalk project that will go from Lorraine Drive west on Orange River Boulevard to Palm Beach Boulevard. It’s being designed now,” says a County representative.
FHP said the crash remains an active investigation.
