BUCKINGHAM, Fla. — Buckingham residents are wondering who they can turn to after finding a dead dog in the middle of the roadway.

Lauren Donato tried to help out when they saw a pet in need along Orange River. She received a call from a friend Friday night that requested their help.

“She knew for sure that there was one dog on the side of the road dead, and the other one crossed her into her path, and she almost hit it,” Donato said.

Donato pulled the deceased dog to the side of the road before scanning for a chip.

But, they had no luck. And this isn’t the first time they have tried to help.

They try to bring the dogs that have been dumped or hit by cars to the Blue Pearl Emergency Pet Hospital. Although she said most of the time, there isn’t much that can be done to save its life.

“Between Buckingham and Lehigh, I have never seen so many dogs in my life that have been just out missing, I mean, for instance, the ones that we found on the side of the road he had scars all over his body,” Donato said.

Donato has tried to ask Lee County Animal Control for help. Now they are left wondering who they can turn to for a solution.

They both agree that pet owners need to be held responsible.
