Cape Coral City Council approves settlement with Waste Pro over trash pickup issues

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — The City of Cape Coral and Waste Pro have reached a settlement over trash pickup problems.

The settlement was approved by the City Council in an 8-0 vote.

Many hope this is the start of better service.

“It’s a wonderful thing to know some action is being taken,” said resident Sam Yaffey.

The two have been in a fight over pickups and payment for more than a year. First, the city fined Waste Pro for missed pickups. Then, Waste Pro sued the city.

After sitting down for negotiations, the two sides reached an agreement that will go before the City Council on Wednesday.

Under the agreement, the city will withhold around $908,000 since it picked up some of Waste Pro’s routes. But the city will also pay Waste Pro more than $1.7 million it withheld during this negotiation. In addition, Waste Pro agreed to provide free services at the city’s bulk drop-off site until September 2023.

Resident Mike Vastarelli said this settlement is a slap in the face for residents like him who have dealt with the on-going pickup issues.

“I wouldn’t give them anything back. I’d sue them for even more and get rid of them,” said Vastarelli, who also has experience working in sanitation.

The City of Cape Coral and Waste Pro have not commented yet on the settlement.
