BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – A Miami couple has been arrested after they were caught stealing nearly 450 gallons of gasoline from a Bonita Springs gas station.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 7-Eleven located at 24651 S Tamiami Trail after suspicious activity was reported at one of the pumps.

An employee and asset protection confirmed they found a tractor trailer arrive at the pump and purchase 15 gallons of gas. However, it was later revealed they pumped 200 gallons of gas.

Minutes later, a black pickup truck arrived at the same pump and paid for six gallons, but were able to pump another 150 gallons.

Lastly, a silver truck arrived, once again at the same pump, and despite paying for only six gallons, managed to pump another 98 gallons of fuel. This time, responding deputies observed Edson Escalona, 35, and Tanilexis Tortolo, 43, at the pump and placing the gas into an external gas tank.

“This couple thought they could travel to Lee County and steal hundreds of gallons of fuel,” said Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “On average, fuel is $4.05 per gallon and businesses cannot afford to suffer this loss.”

They were both arrested and now face charges with obtaining fuel by fraudulent means.
