Investigation underway after boat catches fire in Bokeelia

BOKEELIA, Fla. — An investigation is underway after a boat caught fire in Bokeelia just before midnight.

Firefighters with the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District responded to the fire on Bocilla Island Club Drive.

The owner of the boat was notified and is on scene to figure out what exactly happened.

“To have something like this happen to us out of the blue … is absolutely just shocking,” said Robert Biermann, owner of the boat. “Who knows what caused it. Was it batteries? Was it some other electrical component? Was it lightning that hit it? Who knows! I don’t know.”

The State Fire Marshal has been called to inspect the boat and figure out the cause of the fire.

It is unsure at the moment if this fire is considered suspicious.
