LEE COUNTY, Fla. — It was good music and good vibes at the Lee County Public Education Center Wednesday morning. The district hosted a new teacher drive thru welcome.

This welcome brought in 450 new teachers to the Lee County School District. These new teachers are considered career changers like Brandi Budlong, who will now be teaching 3rd grade at Skyline Elementary.

“I was a counselor that transitioned to teach. My daughter is on the spectrum so it’s just amazing that I am able to take the skills I’ve learned  not only  for my own child in just my counseling background to help these children,” Budlong said. In the drive thru the new teachers were given a bag of goodies that obtained a teachers guide and other training information.

Tarrita Brown will be teaching 9th through 11th Grade at Cypress Lake High School. She said this event pumped her up for when she has to teach her new students.

“Today makes me feel excited because we’ve done this week-long training and that was super helpful for us beginning teaching.”

These new teachers were put through weeks long training to get prepared for when they are in the classroom starting August 2.

“A lot of this week is not only putting in practicals on how to implement that in the classroom but also how we can go and seek that help when we need it,” Brittany Wilson, a 9th through11th Grade Teacher at Cypress Lake High School, said.

For new teacher Gabriel Hillman, he went to school in the Lee County School District. He said he’s happy to be back teaching in the same hallways. He’ll now be teaching 11th grade at North Fort Myers High School.

“There’s a lot of potential here amongst the next generation and as they are in the hallways and in the classrooms I’m looking forward to seeing how the become mature adults in the next 5, 10, 15 years.”

District officials say the district still needs to hire 243 more teachers before they are expected to go to work August 2. Students go back to school August 10.
