LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Authorities arrested a North Fort Myers woman after stealing a car and leaving its driver stranded at a gas station.

The victim was driving his mother’s Kia when he stopped for gas at the 7-Eleven off Joel Boulevard in Lehigh Acres to get gas. In the passenger seat was Shala Darian Whitford, who had met at a North Fort Myers Casino the night before.

As the victim went into the station to pay with cash, he watched as Whitford made her way to the driver’s seat before taking off.

Later that day, The Cape Coral Police Department noticed a vehicle matching the description of the stolen Kia unoccupied at a gas pump at the Race-Trac at 3010 Northeast Pine Island Road.

Police located Whitford inside, where they found the vehicle’s key fob in her pocket.

Whitford was turned over to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, where she was arrested and charged with grand theft of a vehicle.
