COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Authorities say a Naples man took tens of thousands of dollars for contracting work and never even started the projects.
Gabor Sandor Fazekas, 53, has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including grand theft, impersonating a contractor, and two counts of contracting without a license.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a two-year investigation into Fazekas.
They revealed that in 2020, Fazekas proposed two bathroom renovation projects for elderly clients between February and October.
He would collect over $26,000 from the victims, despite never intending to start the projects.
State prosecutors are also reviewing an additional incident where Fazekas took $65,000 from an elderly victim without ever performing the work.
During their investigation, detectives obtained subpoenas for the bank accounts of both Fazekas and the victims. They also researched county and state records for licenses, permits, and certificates.
“Thanks to an extensive investigation by our Financial Crimes Bureau detectives, there’s one less unlicensed contractor in Collier County preying on senior citizens in our community,” said Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk.
According to Florida law, a person who wishes to perform general, building, and residential construction must be licensed.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office wants consumers to know you can always ask for a contractor to verify proper licensing and proof of insurance before hiring them.
You can also check a contractor’s license online through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation website.
