PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – A Port Charlotte man has been found guilty of child abuse following the death of a six-month-old child under his care.

Joseph Anthony Brooks, 29, was babysitting the child on February 20th, 2020. While in his care, the child stopped breathing, but instead of calling 911, Brooks would call the child’s mother instead.

She would call her sister, who rushed to the residence to bring the child to the hospital.

Doctors would discover the baby had recent abusive head trauma.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit would investigate the incident and eventually arrest Brooks.

Following a four-day trial, Brooks would be found guilty of child abuse and aggravated child neglect.

His sentencing is scheduled for October 7th.
