Punta Gorda man arrested for threatening to kill person on Facebook

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — A Punta Gorda man is behind bars after threatening to kill another person on Facebook.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) received a tip that Edison Andrew Kirkland Jr. was making the threats using an account under “Eddie Kirkland Jr.”

The posts were forwarded to CCSO through their online tip page.

One of the threats said, “because I am not a coward and I’ll be telling you to your face when I come to kill you,” and “I am killing you so that there is no question about why you are being killed, and your life is being taken,” according to the arrest report.

A Charlotte County deputy located Kirkland at his home and took him into custody. He was handcuffed and brought to the Charlotte County jail.

When they arrived at the jail, the deputy showed Kirkland paper printouts of the received threats, which were posted and able to be viewed by others. The deputy asked him if he made and posted the threats, to which he stated he would not admit to posting the threats because additional posts were missing from the chain, to which Kirkland was then shown.

After viewing the transmitted Facebook posts and speaking with Kirkland, the Charlotte County deputy established probable cause for his arrest.
