FORT MYERS, Fla. – Two teenagers walking to their bus stop in Fort Myers were hit by a car on Thursday morning.
Nancy and Daniel Bernardo, both 16, were rushed to the hospital after the driver that hit them fled the scene, said Florida Highway Patrol troopers.
The two family members are juniors at Dunbar High School. They were released from the hospital on Thursday. Nancy has only minor bumps and bruises while Daniel has a dislocated collarbone and is having a little trouble taking deep breaths.
They shared their story of what happened Thursday morning with NBC2.
“We were running a little late,” said Nancy Bernardo. “It was like six so we were running to the bus stop.”
While getting to their bus stop at the corner of Orange River Boulevard and Lorraine Avenue, they were hit fromm behind by a car.
“I turn around and all I see is like the headlights of the car,” she said.
It’s the last memory that Nancy has. Both her and Daniel were left lying in the ditch alongside Orange River Bouelvard.
“When I got my conscious back, I had to go see if Daniel was ok,” she said. “He was in pain, so I could hear him yelling. With him, like, in pain, I didn’t know all of this was going to happen.”
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said 17-year-old Angelina Moreno of Fort Myers was driving the car. She’s accused of driving away from the scene, never stopping to help the kids she just hit.
“You should’ve stopped there,” said Alberto Bernardo. “Even call 911 too.”
Alberto is Nancy’s grandfather and Danie’s father.
Gage: “Do you feel lucky they’re alive tonight?”
Alberto: “Yup. I feel lucky and I was happy with God because one way or another, God saved them.”
While his family is going to heal, he fears if something isn’t done about this bus stop, this might not be the only accident.
“That street is really, really dangerous,” he said.
“It’s dark and we usually have the flashlights on on our phones so they can see that there’s people there,” added Nancy.
Troopers arrested Moreno. NBC2 is working to learn what she’s been charged with.
